CAMPAIGN MANAGER
Dr. Mark Kabban holds a doctorate in Education Leadership from Harvard University and is an accomplished educator, leadership expert, and community advocate with a lifelong commitment to empowering young people and strengthening institutions. He is the founder of YALLA (Youth and Leaders Living Actively), an organization dedicated to developing leadership and opportunity for refugee and migrant youth, and the founder of the Examined Leadership Collective, a practice focused on adult development and equity-centered leadership.
His work has earned national and international recognition, including the CNN Hero Award, Arab American “40 Under 40” honors, the Mead Fellowship, and recognition as a Top Five Young World Changer by DoSomething.org.
Across his career, Dr. Kabban has led leadership development and coaching initiatives in diverse settings, from U.S. public school systems and universities to international education networks, nonprofit organizations, and professional sports academies. His work is grounded in deliberately developmental leadership frameworks, with a focus on emotional resilience, equity, and institutional effectiveness. To date, he has coached and advised more than 100 leaders across K–12 districts, higher education, and mission-driven organizations.
Through his work, Dr. Kabban brings a powerful combination of academic rigor, real-world leadership, and a deep commitment to equity and community impact—making him a vital asset to the campaign team.
Doctor Jose Cruz
CAMPAIGN POLICY ADVISOR
Jose Cruz holds a Master of Education (Ed.M.) from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Psychology at Universidad Albizu, focusing on consulting, research, and teaching to improve organizational effectiveness and leadership impact. He once held the position of Executive Director of the Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI), where he has dedicated his career to expanding college access and success for low-income and first-generation students.
A recognized educational leader, Jose was named a 2016 National TRIO Achiever for his work advancing equity in education and was honored as Civic Leader of the Year in 2014 by The San Diego Union-Tribune through its Latino Champions program.
His academic training emphasizes adolescent development, community-based prevention programs, and qualitative research, which directly informs his leadership approach. Through his work, Jose focuses on strengthening institutions and preparing leaders to better serve at-risk youth and underserved communities.
With a deep commitment to educational equity and community empowerment, Jose brings both professional expertise and lived dedication to expanding opportunities for the next generation—making him a valuable member of the campaign team.
CAMPAIGN TREASURER
Rich Riel is a three-time candidate for Mayor of San Diego, former Chief Financial Officer, and former Chief of Staff to California Coastal Commissioner Gil Contreras. He played a leading role in the effort to amend the San Diego City Charter in 1988, establishing term limits for all elected offices.
A longtime community leader, financial professional, and technology entrepreneur, Riel brings decades of experience across public service and the private sector. He has held leadership roles in banking, construction, and emerging technologies, while also serving on local boards, state commissions, and civic initiatives. His career reflects a consistent commitment to structural reform, economic opportunity, and responsible governance.
CAMPAIGN FIELD DIRECTOR
Edward Kashou is an accomplished executive, entrepreneur, and community leader with decades of experience in business operations, finance, and strategic growth. He has built and led multiple successful enterprises across San Diego, demonstrating a consistent ability to strengthen organizations and guide them through expansion with discipline and vision.
Currently serving as a senior advisor and campaign manager, Edward brings deep operational insight and strategic leadership to the team. His background in hospitality, marketing, and large-scale operations allows him to support effective decision-making, organizational efficiency, and long-term planning.
Edward is also recognized for his longstanding commitment to community service, including more than 37 years of weekly homeless feeding initiatives in San Diego and over 30 years of service as a Board Member and Treasurer of Saint Demiana Church. In recognition of his impact, he received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in 2016 presented by U.S. Representative Scott Peters.
Known for his integrity, service, and results-driven leadership, Edward remains a trusted and valued contributor to the campaign.
